Youth: We are the Weapon

Updated: Aug 20, 2019

Courage, selflessness, patriotism … these are the very traits of our heroes who fought against the Spanish invaders.
Today, our nation is filled with divisiveness, violence, and injustice.
The exemplary acts of courage, selflessness, and patriotism shown by Jose Rizal, Andres Bonifacio, Gabriela Silang, Apolinario Mabini, Gregorio del Pilar, and many more… are what they want from us. They fought no matter what the cost might be.
The youth may not have the same weapons as our forefathers. Our enemies may be diverse. We may not even fight in the same arena, but our weapons are well enough suited to our very own abilities in our very own battlefield.
There is no need to be passive, procrastinating, and hopeless. We need to stir up and shield ourselves with the courage and selflessness required to fight our foes and strive to attain justice and win back who we are as Filipinos not only within ourselves but also within the society where we live.
Selflessness is the enemy of the corrupt. The fight against corruption is waged in a big battlefield for most Filipinos. Rampant corrupt practices in society, as witnessed by the youth, are causing the country serious trouble. This is one big hindrance to progress.
Unfortunately, the youth were, are, and will be victims—what should we do?
Hmmm.., we should not remain mute and unreceptive to what is happening in our society. We should act on it!
As always, we prepare ourselves to avail of whatever devices we can use against some of our politicians’ unethical practices and call them out. There are platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Youtube, among others that we can use to make our voices heard.
Do me a favor. I want you to imagine a country that is united, abundant, and patriotic. Just imagine there is food daily on the table of every family and a job for everyone who is capable to work; police and military men are always there to serve and to protect; teachers get appropriate salaries and state-of-the-art educational materials; there are more schools; government employees are honest because they are well compensated; doctors and nurses, engineers and architect do not want to work abroad but prefer stay to serve their own countrymen; netizens use social media to stop hate speech and violence; and there are more generous agencies willing to share and help in order to make this country a better place.
Who does not want these things to happen? We do want these things! We want these as much as we want our country to have its own self-worth, taking pride throughout the world.

The eyes of the Filipino youth are not weak; our ears are not deaf. We know what is happening in our country.
What our heroes had done for our country is a good example of courage, selflessness, and patriotism. The reason why we honor them and their heroism every 9th of April, every 12th of June, every 26th of August, for they are the pillars of our future. We give them our respect and appreciation as a sign of gratitude. We salute our heroes who serve as the pillars to achieve a strong foundation to a very successful and productive life that we will pass on to the next generations.
We are the youth. We are brave, selfless, and patriotic. We are the youth. WE..ARE..THE..WEAPON!
